How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric Vehicle?

Woman charging 2021 Ford Escape Hybrid

If you’re new to the EVs and you’re considering getting one as your next Naperville ride, you are probably wondering “How long does it take to charge an electric car?” There is no one answer because depending on the charging option you use and the type, make, and model of the EV, the electric car charging time will be different. Explore the three main types of EV charging — domestic charging, rapid domestic charging, and public charging — before browsing our EV & Hybrid inventory

Main Types of EV Charging

Domestic Outlet Home Charging (Regular Outlet)

  • Uses a normal grounded (three-prong) 110V/120V charging outlet
  • Also known as Level 1 Charging
  • While domestic outlet home charging isn’t fast, it is perfect for topping off some of the charge you used during the day.
  • Usually it takes around 24 hours or more for a full charge. This means this method will take a few days, instead of hours, for a full charge!

Installed Brand-Approved Domestic Charging

  • Uses rapid (usually 240V+) chargers
  • Also known as Level 2 Charging
  • This method of charging is usually installed by professionals.
  • How long does it take an electric car with Level 2 charging? It will be faster than Level 1 charging, so expect hours instead of days!
  • DC fast chargers are more common than AC ones.
  • It is possible to charge to 80% in half an hour or forty minutes, but the last 20% will take longer as the rate of charging speed is decreasing.

Public Charging

  • Each station will offer different types and speeds. However, they usually offer Level 2 charging speeds, so you can get back on the Montgomery roads as soon as possible.
  • Find them at parking garages, malls, hotels, apartment buildings, and big-name national stores like Walgreens and Kohls.

Electric Car Charging Times By Type

Typical Domestic Charging Time

Since most Yorkville drivers will probably charge their car back home, they are probably wondering “How long does it take to charge an electric car at home?” That will depend on if you have the Level 1 or Level 2 charging:

  • Level 1 EV charging – Usually takes days for a full charge
  • Level 2 EV charging – Usually takes several hours for a full charge

However, if you know how far you will be traveling, you can usually charge for 20-30 minutes with Level 2 charging to get between 60-200 miles of range. That’s why it’s common to do some “top-off” charging during the day with overnight charging.

Perhaps, you are eyeing a Ford plug-in hybrid, such as the Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid SE. Then, the good news is that you can expect your electric car charging times to be as less as between 1-4 hours to fully charge because these cars use both electricity and gasoline!

Typical Public Charging Charging Time

When you’re away from your home, you can expect to charge your vehicle fully in an hour, 4 hours, 6 hours, or 11 hours. This will depend on which car you have and which charging speed is offered at the public station you are at. They usually have 22 kW charging, 43-50 kW rapid charging, and 150 kW rapid charging.
