Some Naperville and Oswego drivers might not be aware of how rare it is to see a flat-plane-crankshaft V8 engine in an American vehicle — typically, these types of engines are only found in exotic European sports cars. Therefore, it should be of great value to learn that, in the upcoming 2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350, Ford has put this incredibly powerful V8 engine under the hood, making it available for a much more reasonable price. Let’s take a closer look at some of the specs you will find with the 2017 Mustang Shelby GT350 engine.

Electrifying Design

Although previous Mustang models have been equipped with 5.0L V8 engines, the new 2017 model now has an entirely new 5.2L V8, about which Eric Ladner, its chief engineer, emphasized its differences from typical Ford engines, noting that it has “Different bores, water jackets and head bolts drove us to a new block, and the crankshaft, rods, bearings, cylinder heads, intake and exhaust valves, oil pan, pick-up tube, gaskets and rear crank seal are unique.”

Even though this new engine is 13 pounds lighter than previous Mustang V8 engines, it still offers more displacement and 20% more power. It also has higher compression, 10% higher volumetric efficiency, lower friction, and an astonishing 8,250-rpm redline. The maximum revs and the high levels of airflow the engine requires are the two primary reasons for its flat-plane crank design.

Commanding Power

Ford’s chief engineer had a goal in mind when designing this 5.2L V8, which was providing high-end torque in addition to impressive horsepower. While Ford initially set their goals for this engine at 500 hp at a 7,500-rpm power peak and 410 lb-ft of torque at 4,750 rpm, they managed to blast right past this target with a resounding 526 hp at 7,500 rpm and 429 lb-ft at 4,750 rpm. It is Ford’s most commanding, powerful naturally aspirated street-legal engine ever.
