2013 Ford Escape 3-1

Ford shows their commitment to the environment in many ways. Vehicles like the 2013 Focus Electric, 2013 Fusion Hybrid, and 2013 C-Max Energi are just a few of the sustainable innovations the automaker has to offer. In addition to building more eco-conscious models and equipping their vehicles with innovative fuel-saving technology, the automaker has decided to go a step even further. The new Ford Escape is loaded with environmentally friendly features like recycled materials and finishes that leave less of a carbon footprint. Take a look at all of the green features found in this sleek and sporty vehicle!

Green Features on the Ford Escape

Most people just toss out their empty plastic water bottles, but not at Ford. The manufacturer uses 25 20-ounce plastic bottles to produce the carpeting in the new Escape. Ford has never used this type of carpeting in an SUV before. As of June 2013, around 277,000 units of the next-generation Ford Escape have been sold. If 25 plastic bottles are used to make the carpeting for each SUV, that means that nearly seven million bottles will not make their way to already overcrowded landfills.

Those concerned about the durability of carpeting made from plastic bottles have nothing to worry about. These materials have undergone rigorous tests to make sure they meet the automaker’s strict quality standards. A device called a Taber 5150 can simulate at least five years of wear and tear in 10 to 15 minutes.

Recycled materials in the Escape’s carpeting are not the only green features drivers can enjoy. In the seats and head restraints, five percent soy foam is used. The dash insulation consists of scrap cotton from old jeans, sweaters, and other items of clothing. The climate control gasket is made up of 100 percent recycled tires, and 100 percent recycled plastics comprise the powertrain undershields. The tailpipe trims now use stainless steel, which is better for the environment than trims plated with chromium.
